WoW: Horde Leveling Guide - Kalimdor - 10-20

Basic information to keep you leveling on the right path.

Northern Barrens
Level 10-20
Location Central Kalimdor
Instances Wailing Caverns
Quest Hubs
Zone Resources Resource List
The Northern Barrens is one of the two zones on the continent of  Kalimdor that players can use to achieve level 20. Only recently has the Northern Barrens sprung into existence. Before the return of Deathwing the Northern Barrens and Southern Barrens were combined to make one giant mega zone that was the birth place of the infamous Barrens chat. When the Cataclysm struck the zone was torn asunder with a huge lava river springing up from the earth and forever separating the Northern and Southern Barrens.

Shortly following the Cataclysm the giant lava river seemed like a mere nuisence when the once totally Horde zone was invaded by Alliance forces. Camp Taurajo has been burnt to the ground and the zone is now considered to be “contested”.  On a brighter note the seemingly endless searching of Mankrik for his beloved wife’s body has finally come to an end and thanks to the tireless efforts of the Druid Naralex the southern part of the zone has been revived from it’s desert state into a lush oasis. However, most of the zone still resembles the rugged African savannah.

Several breadcrumb quests can be found that lead to the Northern Barrens including “Conscript of the Horde”, “Warchief’s Command: Northern Barrens!” and “Preserving the Barrens” all of which can be obtained in the neighboring zone of Durotar. The Northern Barrens is also home to the Wailing Caverns, a five man instance for players levels 10-25.

Far Watch Post

  • Location: See Zone Map (1)
  • Total Number of Available Quests: Six
  • Elite/Group Quests: None

From Far Watch Post players will be sent to Grol’dom Farm by means of the quest “Crossraod Caravan Pickup”. To gain access to this quest players must complete the quest “The Far Watch Offensive” the last in a quest chain starting with “Conscript of the Horde“, “Preserving the Barrens“, or “Warchief’s Command: Northern Barrens”.

Grol'dom Farm

  • Location: See Zone Map (2)
  • Total Number of Available Quests: Nine
  • Elite/Group Quests: None
After Grol’dom Farm it will finally be time for players to head to the Crossroads and once again they will be doing so as part of a caravan escort via the quest “Crossroads Caravan Pickup”. This quest can be obtained immediately upon arrival at Grol’dom Farm, so be sure to complete all other quests here before joining the caravan.

The Crossroads

  • Location: See Zone Map (3)
  • Available Quests: Twelve
  • Elite/Group Quests: None
  • Tip: This is the first quest hub in the zone with a flight path, be sure to pick it up!
Upon arriving at the Crossroads players will find that as quickly as they arrive, they will be leaving once again. “The Forgotten Pools” sends the players to the Forgotten Pools, one of the lush oasis areas in the zone. Here two NPCs offer two quests of their own that can be completed alongside the ones previously obtained at the Crossroads.

The Forgotten Pools

  • Location: See Zone Map (a)
  • Total Number of Available Quests: Two
  • Elite/Group Quests: None
Once questing is completed at the Forgotten Pools players will once again head back to the Crossroads where they will obtain “In Fungus We Trust” and “A Growing Problem”, both of which will send the players away from the Crossroads again to the Stagnant Oasis.

The Stagnant Oasis

  • Location: See Zone Map (b)
  • Total Number of Available Quests: Five
  • Elite/Group Quests: None
  • Tips: While completing the quest “Flushing out Verog” please note that while there are plenty of Centaur tents around the Oasis, the tents containing the quest item you seek are actually on the Oasis. If you venture to tents outside the green edges of the Oasis you have gone to far.
After completing the quests in Crossroads players will have two options as to where to adventure next.  “The Purloined Payroll” and “Who’s Shroomin’ Who?” will lead players to the Goblin run town of Ratchet along the coast, while “Deathgate’s Reinforcements” will take players to the west of the zone where they will find a small outpost used to fend off the almost constant Centaur attacks. The outpost contains fewer quests and no breadcrumb quests leading players elsewhere so it is suggested this quest hub is visited first.

Regthar Deathgate's Outpost

Location: See Zone Map (4)
Total Number of Available Quests: Three
Elite/Group Quests: "Counterattack!"
Tips: While completing the Hezrul Bloomark quest please note that Herzrul is a level 19 mob accompanied by two level  17 guards making this quest rather difficult. While not listed as a group quest it may be a good idea to bring a friend along.

After the quests are completed at Regthar Deathgate’s Outpost are completed players should now head to Ratchet using the breadcrumb quests mentioned above.

Ratchet

Location: See Zone Map (5)
Total Number of Available Quests: Twenty
Elite/Group Quests: None
Tips: This quest hub is one of three in the zone with a flight path. Don’t forget to pick it up to save yourself time while traveling!

The quest “Raging River Ride” will send players out of Rachet in style on a river boat and after an uneventful ride players will find themselves at the next quest hub; Nozzlepot’s Outpost.

Nozzlepot's Outpost

Location: See Zone Map (6)
Total Number of Available Quests: Eleven
Elite/Group Quests: None
Tips: This quest hub is one of three in the zone with a flight path. Don’t forget to pick it up to save yourself time while traveling!

While completing quests at Nozzlepot’s Outpost players will obtain the quest “They Call Him Swiftdagger, He Kills Harpies” which will ask them to seek out Darsok Swiftdagger  who has a few quests up his sleeve.

Darsok Swiftdagger

Location: See Zone Map (7)
Total Number of Available Quests: Three
Elite/Group Quests: None

Your questing experience in the Northern Barrens is over, and you are ready to move on and thankfully there is as per usual a breadcrumb quest to lead you onward. While you have already left the Crossroads far behind at least one more visit is in order. Here at level 19 the quest “To The Mor’shan Rampart” opens effectively leading players into Ashenvale. Don’t feel like heading back to the Crossroads? Seek out the nearest Warchief’s Command board where you will find the quest “Warchief’s Command: Ashenvale!”. Congratulations on a successful completion of the zone!

Azshara is the second zone choice on Kalimdor players have while leveling from 10-20. Until very recently had been reserved for players levels of higher levels. While the level range of Azshara has certainly changed, the overall feel of the zone has not. Cloaked in seemingly eternal Autumn Azshara is a mixture of romance and gloom.

Named after the infamous Queen Azshara, the zone has recently been turned over the Goblins of the Bligewater Cartel, the Horde’s newest allies. In typical Goblin fashion the new inhabitants have taken it upon themselves to blast apart the zone to suit their fancy, turning it into a giant Horde symbol, to prove their allegiance to the Horde.

This raping of the landscape has angered the Night Elf forces here and as such they have launched an all out attack on the Horde in the zone. However, another set of new inhabitants who have  taken over the northern reaches of the zone pose an ever greater threat to both Horde and Alliance alike. The Black Dragonflight, bent on hunting down Azuregos, along with the Naga who have also made their home in Azshara are a formidable problem indeed.

Azshara is considered a contested zone, belonging to neither Horde nor Alliance, and currently has no active instances.

Players who wish to venture into this zone will find that breadcrumb quest at the nearest Warchief’s Command Board, found in either Thunder Bluff or Orgrimmar. This board will provide you with the quest “Warcheif’s Command: Azshara!” which will lead you to the very first quest hub in the zone located at the newly made rear gate to Orgrimmar.

Orgrimmar Rear Gate

  • Location: See Zone Map (1)
  • Available Quests: Ten
  • Elite/Group Quests: None
  • Tips: The Runaway Shredders found near this quest hub will not attack you unless attacked even though they are shown as hostile mobs.

Assuming the player completes all the quests at Orgrimmar’s Rear Gate they will have two quests, “Return of the Highborne?” and “Report to Horzak”, leading them to the nearby Orgrimmar’s Rocketway Exchange, one of the many stops of the Goblin Rocketway.  Quests found here relate to the nearby Mountainfoot Strip Mine.

Orgrimmar Rocketway Exchange

  • Location: See Zone Map (2)
  • Available Quests: Six
  • Elite/Group Quests: None

Complete all the quests at the Orgrimmar’s Rocetway Exchange to unlock the quest “Another Warm Body” which will send you on your way to the next quest hub at Forlorn Ridge. Here you will explore the Ruins of Eldarath and help exterminate the Naga forces there.

Gallywix Defense Post

  • Location: See Zone Map (3)
  • Available Quests: Six
  • Elite/Group Quests: None

After completing various quests that allow you to wipe out large numbers of Naga and learn of a very valuable object the quest “Private Chat” will become available and you will be sent back to the Orgrimmar Rocketway Exchange.

Orgrimmar Rocketway Exchange (2)

  • Location: See Zone Map (2)
  • Available Quests: Seven
  • Elite/Group Quests: None

Helping take care of a rather pesky bulldozer will make players more than ready to once again be leaving the Orgrimmar Rocketway Exchange with the quest “Need More Science”. This time players will be headed off to the Southern Rocketway Terminus, and don’t forget you can use the Goblin Rocketway to get there twice as fast!

Southern Rocketway Terminus

  • Location: See Zone Map (4)
  • Available Quests: Eighteen
  • Elite/Group Quests: None
  • Tips: This quest hub contains the first flight path you will encounter in the zone. Don’t forget to pick it up!.

Complete the quests at the Southern Rocketway Terminus to unlock the quest “A Hello to Arms” which will take you away from the Naga, giant poo, and mass explosions that marked this quest hub to Bligewater Harbor for some more Goblin related fun.

Bligewater Harbor

  • Location: See Zone Map (5)
  • Available Quests: Six
  • Elite/Group Quests: None
  • Tips: Another flight path! Don’t miss it!
Your stay in the Harbor will be brief and after some running around you will find yourself faced with two breadcrumb quests:  “Friends Come In All Colors” and “There Are Many Like It”, take the later of the two and you will literally be rocketed onto The Shattered Strand.

The Shattered Strand

  • Location: Location: See Zone Map (6)
  • Available Quests: Four
  • Elite/Group Quests: None
Upon completing this small set of quests your heroics will be recognized with the quest “Field Promotion” which will send you to a forward post in the Ruins of Eldarath to begin work with some Goblin special forces.

Ruins of Eldarath

  • Location: Location: See Zone Map (7)
  • Available Quests: Six
  • Elite/Group Quests: None
Finish the quests here and now it’s time to complete the other breadcrumb quest you obtained while in Bligewater Harbor “Friends Come In All Colors” which will take you into the Ruins of Arkkoran along the northern beaches of the zone where you will complete quests for a very strange Murloc.

Ruins of Arkkoran

  • Location: Location: See Zone Map (8)
  • Available Quests: Five
  • Elite/Group Quests: None
If you have completed all the Murloc’s tasks the quest “Wash Out” will open up and you will be granted a relaxing turtle ride down the beach to the Northern Rocketway Exchange.

Northern Rocketway Exchange

  • Location: Location: See Zone Map (9)
  • Available Quests: Eight
  • Elite/Group Quests: None
Almost as soon as you arrive at the Northern Rocketway Exchange you will receive the quest “Dressed to Impress” which will send you on your way to the next quest hub where you will meet the rather eccentric Archmage Xylem. You have the option to either complete all the quests at the Northern Rocketway Exchange before moving on or picking up the quests from both hubs and completing them simultaneously.

Ruins of Nordressa

  • Location: Location: See Zone Map (10)
  • Available Quests: Six
  • Elite/Group Quests: None
  • Tips: The quest “Waste of Thyme” is very appropriately named as it is a huge waste of time. The quest item, Living Ire Thyme, is very rare and blends into the grass in Azshara almost flawlessly. To help make this quest a tad bit easier, this herb appears to only spawn under trees. If you find you are still having difficulties be sure to set your Ground Clutter video setting to low which should make the Thyme easier to spot.
After completing the quests for his apprentices Archmage Xylem will send you to the Arcane Pinnacle via the quest “The Pinnacle of Learning”. Here you will undertake several trials in order to continue to prove yourself.

Arcane Pinnacle

  • Location: Location: See Zone Map (11)
  • Available Quests: Nine
  • Elite/Group Quests: None
  • Tips: While attempting to complete the first quest you encounter here “Watch Your Step” remember to click on the power sources as you jump up the Cliffside. If you do not activate all six of the power sources you will have to jump down and begin again.
Prove yourself to the Archmage and you will have the chance make contact with a love struck Azuregos. Convince him to join the cause in ridding Azshara of the Black Dragonflight and follow the quest chain until the quest “Fade to Black” becomes available. This quest will send you to the next quest hub at the Northern Rocketway Terminus.

Northern Rocketway Terminus

  • Location: Location: See Zone Map (12)
  • Available Quests: Three
  • Elite/Group Quests: None
Complete the available quests at the Northern Rocketway Terminus and be sent packing back to Bligewater Harbor where you will turn in the quest “Farewell Minnow”. Once turned in another nearby quest “Airborne Again” will open and you will be off on another adventure, this time to Valormok. Ignore the fact the quest giver apparently cannot properly spell the name of this quest hub.

Valormok

  • Location: Location: See Zone Map (13)
  • Available Quests: Ten
  • Elite/Group Quests: None
  • Tips: While attempting to complete the first quest you encounter here “Watch Your Step” remember to click on the power sources as you jump up the Cliffside. If you do not activate all six of the power sources you will have to jump down and begin again.
If you are brave and cunning enough to finish the quests at Valormok you will receive the quest “Probing into Ashenvale” which requests your assistance in the lovely land of Ashenvale, which will be the next stop on your leveling adventure. Congratulations on a zone well done!
